TRIBUTE TO BRIAND

FRANCO-GERMAN RELATIONS STRESEMANN'S PRAISE Times Cable. Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Sunday. The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” reports that Dr. Stresemann, German Foreign Minister, has written a preface to a collection of M. Briand’s speeches, which has been published in Germany, illustrating his long faithfulness to the cause of a Franco-Ger-man rapprochement. Dr. Stresemann,

M. Briand urging that rapprochement should not only be a shock absorber, recalls that since the war Franco-German relations have become the keystone of a permanent European pacification. Immediately after the war, the Germans were favourable to an elimination of the elements poisoning the relations. On the contrary, the French desired greater power and only gradually realised that military hegemony was no guarantee of prosperity, and provoked German exasperation, when it was compared with the French co-operation in the international system of seeking peace. M. Briand’s persistent efforts in the pursuit of a policy of rapprochement before France was ripe for it were chiefly responsible for the Franco-German understanding.
