(From Our Own Correspondent) DARGAVILLE, Sunday. Notwithstanding the showery weather there was a good attendance of golf enthusiasts at the local links yesterday for the opening of the Northern Wairoa Golf Club’s season. At 1.30 p.m. the president, Mr. F. S. Goulding, formally declared the season open. The president’s wife, Mrs. Goulding, drove the first ball. A mixed foursome competition took place, resulting in Mrs. Munn and Mr. Roy Stoddart winning the trophies presented by the president. During the afternoon the ladies dispensed afternoon tea. CYCLE ROAD-RACING J. WHITTON SURPRISES BYRNES AND WADE Saturday’s races at Mangere were contested by 66 riders, and in the. Manukau Amateur Cycle Club’s two events, the finishes were fought oat by record bunches of riders, 17 beingin one and 21 in the other. The form shown by some of the competitors Avas very consistent, especially in the case of F. Taylor, who won the novice; N. Fisher, who won the open; and J. Whitton, avlio gained fastest time in the open event. In the Auckland Athletic and Cycling Club’s 20-mile race, the winner, G. Hall, Avas also consistent, he having won last week’s cash race. Results: MANUKAU AMATEUR CYCLE CLUB Eleven-mile Novice Handicap (for riders avlio have never Avon a road race). —F. Taylor, 2min SOsec, 1: G. W. Rollerson, 2min 35sec, 2: F. J. Potter, 2min 15sec, 3. Winner's riding time, 29min 54sec. Fastest time, H. DAvight, scr., 2Smin 45 secs. Thirty-two riders started. Won on the line by six inches, same distance between second and third. The winner, Taylor, has been riding well for some time. He looked beaten by Rollerson 100 yards from the finish, but kept going, and got up on the line to win by a narrow margin. The judges had difficulty i?i separating the other placed riders, as there were over 20 riders finishing all in a bunch. IT. Dwight, scr., was responsible for a hard ride, to Avin fastest time. Five and a-half Miles Open Handicap. —N. Fisher, lmin. 1; L. Pinfold, 40sec. 2; C. I. Gainsborough, SOsec, 3. Winner’s time, 14min SBsec. Fastest time, J. Whitton. 20sec, 14min. 17sec. Twentyone riders started. Won by inches, second and third close up. From the word “go!” riders on all marks got away smartly, and made every post a winning one. When three miles had been done, there was a big bunch of riders all together. Included among them were riders from the 40secs mark upwards. Nearing the finish there was a scramble, and Fisher, getting a clear run, just lasted long enough to catch the judge’s eye. It was a splendid race, and Fisher certainly rode a clever finish. J. Whitten, 20secs., who beat Wade and Byrnes, the scratch men, for fastest time, dropped his co-markers early, and practically rode alone. AUCKLAND ATHLETIC AND CYCLING CLU B 20 Miles Open Handicap.—G. Hall. 4min SOsec, 1: K. Rae, 4min 30sec, 2: D. Storey, 2min, 3. Time, 54min 33 l-sseos. Fastest time, D. Storey, 2min. 49min 46sec. Thirteen riders faced the starter in this event, and included in them Avas A. Lindop, a Westport rider. The gaps pro\*ed too much for the different groups to pick up, as riders, working together like clockwork, were responsible for this. Matthews, the limit rider, retired early, and as the halfway mark was passed it was ouite evident that the chances of the scratch men (Hayes and Prior) were gone. Storey was riding strongly at this stage, but Hall and Rae were working well together out in front, and with a minute to the good from the next bunch entering the last lap, these two were never troubled, finishing in order. Storey easily beat Henderson and Lindop for third place, and secured
