MUNICIPAL CONCERT

MR. MAUGHAN BARNETT’S RECITAL There was a very appreciative audience at the Town Ilall last evening when a programme of organ music was given by the city organist, Mr. Maughan Barnett. He opened with “Hosannah,” of DuT)bis, which was accorded excellent treatment, and followed with an arrangement by Parry of a choral prelude of “Abide With Me.” A Gavotte and Minuet by ITandel, and Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in G, were two most artistic offerings, as also was Boellman’s second suite, the contrasts of which were appropriately stressed. The organist’s own composition, “Berceuse,” proved a popular number and was warmly applauded. The programme concluded with the “Angelus,” an old Breton melody, arranged for organ and bells, and Postlude, by Le-febure-Wely. GRAND “THE CIRCUS” “The Circus,” Charlie Chaplin’s latest, and funniest picture, is now being shown at the Grand Theatre. The story is just a simple episode in the life of an engaging tramp. Charlie accidentally wanders into the ring of an unsuccessful circus and makes the customers laugh. Scenting better business, the proprietor engages him as a comic property man. He is" the hit of the show. The proprietor’s daughter tells him he is. Then the girl falls in love with the handsome wire-walker, and Charlie, heart-broken, no longer can be funny. Awaking from his dream of unhappiness, he helps the girl and her lover to elope. The circus moves on to another stand and Charlie is left, standing in the middle of the deserted lot, just the I pathetic, lovable little tramp he was ! before his brief career as a circus star. EDENDALE “LADIES MUST DRESS” “Ladies Must Dress.” starring Virginia Valli and Lawrence Gray, is the first feature on the programme to be shown at the Edendale Theatro tonight. Virtually all the trouble arises when Miss Valli, playing the role of Eve, discovers that her sweetheart (Lawrence Gray) is secretly ashamed of the clothes she wears. She has been diligently saving her money to pool with his own bank account so that they could marry. Perhaps some of the most humorous and instructive episodes occur when Miss Valli, as the girl, begins to dress up and attract the favourable attention of other men, which causes her lover to become furiously jealous. "Jewels of Desire,” with Priscilla Dean, is the second feature.
