ROSKILL ROAD BOARD
ANNUAL ELECTION WIN FOR “JONES” TICKET At least three-quarters of the eligible electors recorded their votes on Saturday when polling took place for the annual election of the Mount Roskill Road Board. Mr. E. F, Jones, the present chairman of the board, headed one ticket and Mr. G. E. Tansley, an ex-chair-man, led the “opposition.” One significant result is the defeat of Messrs. Belcher, Robertson and Tozer, three prominent members of the old board and listed on the Tansley ticket. The result of the election gives Mr. Jones a following of five and Mr. Tansley two, with which to carry on for the ensuing 12 months. The preliminary count resulted in the election of the following nine candidates: E. F. Jones 888 T. Davies 753 E. A. Pearce 751 S. Scarborough .. .. 712 E. W. Foote 686 G. E. Tansley 677 A. Swales 447 H. Cooper .. .. 431 J. Patterson 341 T. Cummack .. 248 Informal 59 All of those elected, with the exception of Messrs. Donald, Goodall and Roberts, have had previous experience on the board. The area of Mount Roskill is; nearly equal to that of Mount Eden and Mount Albert combined. Being a road board district, voting is according to property values, and some ratepayers have three votes. The heavy voting power is confined to one small quarter, Greenwood’s Corner, where eight of the nine members of the board live, with only from a-quarter to half a mile between them. Three of the members live in one street.
