REGAINING A WIFE

HUSBAND TAKES HER SUITCASE THEFT CHARGE DISMISSED (From Our Oxen Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. Unusual evidence of domestic strife was given in a case in the Police Court this morning, when Ivan Slakich. a labourer, of Frankton, was charged with stealing a suitcase at Inglewood on April 6. In a statement to the police accused said he married a girl four years ago at Whatawata. Her parents forbade him to live with her for three years. After 12 months of married life he was ordered to pay maintenance. He failed twice in payments and went to gaol. On April 5 he went to Inglewood, and saw his wife in a car with two other men. When he appeared his wife attempted to drown herself in the river. “I took her suitcase and asked her to come and live with me,” accused continued. “She said ‘Slakich, you Accused said he took the case and tied it on his motor-cycle, so as to prevent her going away. In the witness-box the wife denied most of accused’s statements. Addressing accused, the magistrate, Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M.. said that considering the evidence the charge was absurd. He advised Slakich to leave his wife alone and dismissed the case, making an order for a return of the property.
