Trotting Season Ends in Southern Area

GOOD SPORT AT FORBURY DALMENY AT FALSE PRICE (Special to THE SUN) DUNEDIN. Saturday. The Forbury Park Trotting Ciub's winter meeting terminated to-day in cold but fine weaI ther. The rain of the previous day left the track in a heavy state. The attendance was good and although speculation was keen there was a big drop in the returns compared with last year’s figures. The machine handled £32,106 for the day, against £37,600 on the final day last winter, the total for the meeting being £53,317, compared with . £62,529 in 1927. Favourite’s Costly Break When the Tahuna Handicap had been in progress three furlongs, only four horses had any chance of reaching the money. These were Victor Bingen, Jock Bingen, Hawkesbury’s Pride and Repute. Jock Bingen tired badly half a mile from home, and Victor Bingen, who had made the pace, was still in front, with Hawkesbury’s Pride giving a mixed display. Turning for home Repute moved up to Victor Bingen, who tired in the straight, and Repute broke, leaving Hawkesbury’s Pride to reach tho judge first. Of the beaten division. Merry Bingen, Kerrwood Bell and Tot Logan gave the best displays. Dick Logan Again Driven a clever race from 48yds behind, Dick Logan won the Royal Handicap by a neck from Rio L’Or, who had a rocky passage all the way. Dick Logan will go further in the game and so will Rio L’or. who shows considerable promise. The three-year-old Ardgour, who finished third, made the running for a mile and seven furlongs. He is also a good sort. A hot favourite in Sheila Fleetwood jigged on the mark. La Sonnette Wins Well After Hector’s Own and Kate Thorpe had shown the way for half a mile, Kate Thorpe skied the towel. La Sonnette then went through to second place, and at the far turn he collared Hector’s Own, the pair drawing right away from Maiwliareti and Caprice. Down the lane La Sonnette had Hector’s Own’s measure, and won easily by a length and ahalf, with Maiwhareti eight lengths farther away third. Manhattan’s Stakes Manhattan, by Happy-Voyage—Lady Cherry, made an exhibition of the field of three-year-old trotters in the Sires’ Produce Stakes. He took charge at the stand and cleared out from the field to win by 25 lengths from Mercedes, who finished 20 lengths clear of Patty Todd. Solid Trotter Wins In a stirring finish Peter Swift beat Dalmeny by a head in the Victory Handicap. Fight Ever made the pace for a mile and a-half from Dalmeny, Jolly Chimes, Daphne De Oro, Peter Swift and Autho.r Jinks. With a round to go Author Jinks was in second place. Fight Ever dropped back entering the back stretch, where r— ■ .

Dalmeny went on from Author Jinks, Daphn© De Oro, Zenith and Peter Swift. Going along back Dalmeny drew away from Author Jinks, with Zenith and Peter Swift in hot pursuit. In a tight finish Peter Swift beat Dalmeny by a head. Author Jinks tired in the straight, being three lengths away third. Zenith was fourth and Trimmar failed to leave the mark. After Proud Ata had made the running for a mile and three furlongs from Audo Bell, Real the Great, Petroleuse, Swift bine and’ Elzear in the Peninsula Handicap, Real the Great dashed into the lead. Here Audo Bell broke, and rounding the turn for home, Swiftbine ran through into second place, and once into the straight he wore Real the Great down to win easily. Proud Ata was third. Elzear tired in the last half mile. Jolly Pet’s Fine Effort Jolly Pet registered a marked performance by conceding a big field 60 yards in the Railway Handicap, and having to cover a lot of ground, and winning comfortably by four lengths. Tennessee’s Child, who finished second, was always prominent, but could not beat the winner. Neerson got away badly, but went a good race, and so did Revolt. Mac Dillon, Kreisler and La Sonnette also went good races. Direct Morning was in front at the end of two furlongs in the Farewell Handicap, but broke entering the straight, Dalmeny, Jean McElwyn, Maiwhareti, Kate Thorpe and Dillon

Gold were well placed early, and onc< into the straight, Dalmeny came awaj from the field to win nicely by foui lengths from Jean McElwyn anc Author Jinks, who were a dead hea

for second money. Logan Chief went a good race, and had Author Jinks not fiddled at the start, he would have been difficult to beat.
