Jumpers Are Set to Work at Awapuni
(Special to THE SUN > PALMERSTON N., Saturday. Puwliero, who will make the trip to Hawera for the big jumping contests, was given a couple of strong rounds on the grass proper at Awapuni on Thursday, a track being available next to the rails. The cld fellow put plenty of heart into his work and promises to make a bold bid for the nonours when the distance is not too far. Mister Gamp was another member of the jumping brigade who was not asked to school, the Brolly gelding having the Gasbag gelding B'imp as a companion over a mile. I >espite the fact that he had the outside running, the hurdler was travelling the better at the journey’s end. He should not be long in returning his new owner a portion of his purchase money. Royal Heather (N. Stratton.), Son o’ Mine (H. Gordon) and Maidos (A.. G. Campbell) were sent over the steeplechase fences. Son o’ Mine showed the way over the first brush, but Maidos tvas alongside at the hen coop, only to fall back on the llat, the other pair finishing together. The trio then went on to do a further round, taking in the double brush to complete the task. In the Northerns Vexatious, the new addition to J. Coyle’s string, was restricted to a gallop on the fiat over seven furlongs, with Kilmiss as a companion. The Thurnham mare appeared to handle the going quite well, so she may be found in action during the winter season. Kilmiss has always been a* free mover when the sting is out of the ground, and, when the company is not too rich, the Ivilboy mare should prove capable of adding to her account. Redbank, who is being prepared for the jumping game, was put over a couple of fences, which he took cleanly, if somewhat carefully, the All Red gelding showing a tendency to get in rather close. He has been following the hounds of late, and in this branch has been acquitting himself quite- well. Atareria Schooled Atareria (IT. Gordon) and a hunter from G. New’s stable, the latter having A. G. Campbell as his pilot, were sent over the smaller fences, jumping the two along the home stretch twice. Atareria has had previous experience in the art. he having previously been hunted, and he gave quite a fair display. His companion, however, showed himself to be quite a clever jumper. Chelone and Disrank, two other members of Jones’s team, were also on the tracks, the former being sent along over five furlongs. The Leighton gelding moved quite attractively, and it appears that he has got over the ailment which troubled him for a time, although his stub of a tail is tangible evidence of the inroads the disease made. Disrank, who is by Lord Quex from Morganatic, was not asked to gallop. G. Jones has, in addition to the aforementioned pair, a Kilbroney colt and a Tea Tray filly, but their tasks are meantime being restricted to road work. As the result of Commendation getting into a wire fence, the arrival of the Limond gelding at headquarters has been further delayed, but it is anticipated that he will join up about the end of the month.
