INDIAN TEA DISPLACED
JAVA PRODUCT BECOMES MORE POPULAR POSITION DISQUIETING (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Press Association.) CALCUTTA, Thursday. Calcutta tea circles are greatly interested, but not particularly inclined to’ accept, Mr. G. Pilcher’s House of Commons figures regard the displacement of Indian by Java tea. Although the consumption of Java tea since 1919 has increased from 18,000,000 to 61,000,000 pounds, and Indian tea has declined from 259,000.000 to 233,000,000 pounds, the only menace to Indian tea is considered to be the steady, improving quality of Java tea, which has for a long time been blended with Indian, and more Indian is now being used. At present, the position is disquieting, because there are 40,000,000 pounds in. excess of home stocks. To make the position really strong, Home stocks must drop to 70,000,0001 b by July, but other outside markets are 14,000,0001 b short.
Calcutta opinion is that a great deal depends on Russia. If she comes in as a big buyer, the whole position will be alleviated. That the general tone here is one of confidence is shown by the rising prices in January, when the output figures were highest.
