PAPATOETOE WATER SCHEME RATEPAYERS APPREHENSIVE A request is to be made to the Papa - toetoe Town Board for permission to inspect the work at the water shaft by the Papa toetoe Ratepayers’ Welfare League. The question was discussed at a meeting of the league last evening, and the opinion was expressed it was time some finality was reached. A question of special interest to housewives of the district was also discussed—that is, the number of unlicensed hawkers operating throughout the town district. It was decided that a copy of the bylaws dealing with this matter be obtained, and it will be fully dealt with at the next meeting. BIRKENHEAD BAND ELECTION OF OFFICERS The Birkenhead Band held its annual meeting last evening. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. Had field, presided. The memory of Mr. H. M. Shepherd was honoured by members standing in silence. Mr. Gregg-Smith, the bandmaster, was presented with a salad bowl in honour of the birth of a son. Following officers were elected: Patrons, the Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, and Mr. J. C. Yeomans; treasurer, Mr. P. J. McGovern; secretary, Mr. V. F. Queenin; assistant secretary, Mr. C. 1_ Patten; librarian, Mr. Jas. Webb; auditor, Mr. Noel Stewart; conductor, Mr. Gregg-Smith; committee, Messrs. H. Clark, W. B. Darlow, P. C. Furley (borough council representatives), G. A. Huddlestone, E. S wind ail. Alex. Stott, H. Sapsworth (bandsmen’s representatives), J. MacDonald, and A. G. Jasper (honorary members’ representatives).
The secretary’s annual report stated that open-air recitals were given during the summer months at the bandstand and in Island Bay, and at Beach Haven where a canvass was made for funds, the responses being very generous.
The need of new uniforms was stressed, and after discussion a committee consisting of Messrs. Billman, Gregg-Smith, Pugh, Lunny, and Kelly was formed to endeavour to raise funds during the winter months. RAETIHI AFFAIRS The annual meeting of the parishioners of the parochial district of Raetihi was held in the Druids’ Hall, the Rev. J, H. Datson presiding. There is no doubt that the ! prompt arrival of the brigade on the scene and the splendid work done was instrumental in preventing a very disastrous conflagration.” * s • The "Queen Carnival” and bazaar and other social entertainments to be run in conjunction with the carnival will give “pep” to the local social season during the next few months. The object in view is to raise funds for the building of a new Catholic Church. Very keen interest is being displayed in the Ohakune Railway Football Club this season, and hopes are entertained of securing the two trophies in competition. These are handsome trophies and are envied by the various clubs eligible to play for them. The Elliot Shield, presented for competition between teams from Taihape, Ohakune Taumarunui, Te Kuiti and Frankton Junction, is now held by the latter o 1 üb. The Mullins Bull Cup was won by Taumarunui Club last season, but with the talent available this year Ohakune hopes to conclude their season by winning and holding both trophies.
