DIPHTHERIA OUTBREAK
TAUMARUNUI CASES NO FEARS OF EPIDEMIC (From Our Own Correspondent) TAUMARUNUI. Thursday. The Taumarunui Borough’s long record for a clean bill of health has been broken. Fortunately cases of notifiable infectious diseases are very rare, and the borough is generally regarded as one of the healthiest in New Zealand. Of recent weeks there has been a number of cases of diphtheria, the majority of the victims being pupils of the Technical High School. It is considered that the overcrowding in that institution, resulting in numbers of the scholars having to be taught in the shelter shed may have had some bearing on the cause of infection. Six cases were reported in the borough itself, and four others outside the area, but in the health district. The usual precautions were taken to prevent the spread of the disease, and the health inspector reports that it has not been possible to find any connection between the cases. The authorities do not anticipate that anything in the nature of an epidemic is likely to happen.
