IN THE MARKET PLACE

APPLES MEET DULL MARKET ORANGE SEASON OPENING Most varieties of fruit and vegetables meet with a steady demand in the City Marts. Apples are still dull of sale. Prices of pears and apples remain practically unchanged, the demand for the latter being particularly dull. Munroes have moved up to the top of the list, selling up to 7s 6d a case, but average dessert and cooking apples can be bought for 3s to 5s a case. With the approach of the winter weather the demand for tomatoes is falling, and, though supplies are lower, little improvement is registered in the market. Bananas have increased in price over the week owing to shorter supplies. Stocks will not be supplemented until the arrival of the Tofua from the Fiji group on Monday week. At the moment all oranges are being drawn from California via Wellington. The Cook Island season opens this month, and the Waipahi leaves Auckland on May 10 for Raratonga, Aitutaki and Mangaia on the first trip of the season. Passions in the City Marts are bringing slightly better values. Ample supplies of practically every class of vegetables are coming forward, and within the next two or three weeks the local gardens should be producing to capacity. The demand for supplies from Wellington and the Wairarapa will thus be practically negligible. In the poultry section little change is registered in the market. Pullets are heavily supplied, and values are considerably easier. Choice cockerels are coming forward freely, but meet with a good demand. The egg market registered a further slight improvement over the week.
