Weights Are Out For the Northerns
PUZZLE: PICK THE TREBLE rE near approach of the Auckland winter meeting is heralded by the appearance to-day of the handicapper's adjustments for the two big jumping events and -the principal fiat race. These will provide much food for thought on the part of those sportsmen interested in these contests.
fact that Mr. F. J. McManemin j has seen fit to disclose the weights j a day earlier than anticipated will be appreciated by everybody concerned, for it gives an extra day in which to ponder over the intricate problems set to those who endeavour, year after year, with unbounded optimism. to solve the puzzle, and so bring profit to themselves. A lot of really good hurdlers and cross-country performers were submitted to Mr. McManemin, and a brief glance through the results of his study and the exercise of his judgment shows that he has acquitted his task well. A PERFECT HANDICAP? It is impossible to please everybody. No doubt every owner and trainer whose ho2*se is handicapped above the minimum will consider his horse badly treated, and if this is the unanimous thought of those directly concerned then it can be taken for granted that the handicaps are perfect. Further comment on the weights will be given later.
The Auckland winter fixture is set down to open at Ellerslie on Saturday, June 2, when the Great Northern Hurdles and Cornwall are the principal
events on the card. On Monday, 4 (this will be the official celebration of the King’s Birthday in place of June 3, which this year falls on a Sunday, the Great Northern Steeplechase, easily the most spectacular race of any kind run in the Dominion, comes up for decision. The meeting concludes on Wednesday, June 6. Acceptances for the three big events at the fixture,- together with other first day acceptances, are due on Friday. May 25.
AFTER THE JUMPING DOUBLE
The two events that will primarily j gether with their handicaps, entered concern the early birds are the Great or this year* s big jumping double:
Northern Hurdles and Great Xorth- j ern Steeplechase, and for that reason j the weights apportioned to horses engaged in each of these jumping contests are set out here. Claiming. the dual engagement ai*e no fewer than 25, and their efforts to follow in the footsteps of Sir Rose- j berry, El Gallo (twice) ana Lochella, : winners of the two Northerns in re- i cent years, will be watched with in- ! terest. The difference in the weignts I allocated for some horses in the Hurdles and Steeplechase are most L marked, and in no case is it more so ; than in connection with last year's Steeplechase winner. Beau Cavalier. • In the cross-country race Beau Cavalier has been placed at the top with 12.2, and in the Hurdles he has been let off with 9.2, a drop of three stone Previous failures last winter m his efforts over the sticks are responsible for this, although it cannot be denied that at Te Rapa last week-end he gave ! evidence of having become a better hurdler than hitherto. The following are the horses, to- j
All the above are eligible for the “two Northerns,” so it will be recognised what a task has been set the early pickers.
