Motor-Cafr Drops Into 20 Foot Pit
ROAD CRUST COLLAPSES WOMAN PASSENGER HURT Press Association. CARTERTON, To-day. Heavy rains caused a flood in the Maungatarere River and the water undermined the eastern approach to White Bridge. Charles Zabeil was driving a car with his two sisters as passengers, toward the bridge when the road crust collapsed, and the car with its occupants was precipitated into a pit 12ft wide and 15 to 20ft deep. The driver and one girl in the front seat were thrown clear, but the other sister, Bernie. was tossed from the back seat through the windscreen, severely cutting her head and bruising her face. She was taken to a private hospital, where her wounds were dressed. She was then taken home and is progressing well. The county staff has effected temporary repairs and the bridge is open to light traffic. The motor-car was practically ruined.
