COAST RAILWAY WANTED
GISBORNE TO WAIROA MINISTER REASSURING Press Association. GISBORNE, To-day. Urging that all the known factors indicated the advisability of adopting a coastal route for the railway between Gisborne and Wairoa, and advocating an early start with the construction work on that route, a large deputation waited on the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, this morning. The Minister, in reply, briefly reviewed the various aspects which he, as Minister, had to take into consideration, and assured the deputation that the points raised would be carefully gone into. Outstanding among all the arguments was the question of the initial capital outlay on the respective routes and revenue, which might reasonably be expected in proportion to cost and running expenses. The Minister’s remarks were reassuring regarding the possibility of Gisborne being ' side-tracked by the construction meantime from Hawke’s Bay to the Bay of Plenty by the inland route.
