CONSERVATIVES HOLD SEAT (United P.A. — By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian P.A. — United Service) LONDON, Tuesday. The by-election for the Marylebone seat, rendered vacant by the elevation to the peerage of Lord Hailsham <formerly Sir Douglas Hogg and now' Lord Chancellor) resulted as follows: Sir Rennell Rodd, Conservative 12.5.59 Mr. David Ross, Labour .. .. .. 6,721 Mi. Basil Murray, Liberal .. .. 3.31 S Mr. Murray Is a son of Professor Gilbert Murray. At the general election in 1324 the poll for the Marylebone seat resulted:—Sir Douglas Hogg (new Lord Halisham> Conservative, 24,303; Mr. G. Elmer, Labour, 8,782. The new member, S«r Rennell Rodd, was British Ambassador to Italy,l 908-19, and British Ambassador to Italy. 1908-19, and tions in 1921 and 1923. He was born in November, 1858. Educated at Hailey - bury and at Balliol College, Oxford, he joined the Diplomatic t-ervice in 18S3. He served at Berlin, Athens, 1888: Rome, 1891, and Paris. 1892. He was in charge of the British Agency at Zanzibar. 1593, transferred to Cairo. 1894. was act-ing-Agents and Consul General on various occasions, special Envoy to King Menelik, 1897, missioner to Abyssinia, secretary of the Legation at Cairo. 1894. Counsellor of Embassy at Rome. 1901-4. and Envoy to Sweden. 1904-S.
