JUDGE AVORY GUARDED

THREATENING LETTER SENT MURDER TRIAL SEQUEL (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Press Association) LONDON, Monday. Armed detectives have been appointed to watch Sir Horace E. Avory judge of the King’s Bench Division,’ who last week sentenced to death William Kennedy and Frederick G. Browne for the murder of Constable Gutteridge. This is a precautionary measure and is the outcome of a threatening letter received by the judge since the conclusion of the trial of the two men. Usually such threats are disregarded by the authorities. However, they attach importance to this one, owing to Kennedy’s notorious associates. Mrs. Kennedy, wife of William Kennedy, says she is terribly shocked and has written to Sir Horace assuring him that she did not write the letter and does not know its author. Although she is convinced that her husband did not shoot Constable Gutteridge, she was impressed by the judge’s scrupulous fairness.

Both condemned men intend to appeal against their sentences.
