Verdict for Currie
SENSATIONAL TRIAL ENDS JURY AWARDS £IOO DAMAGES (Australian Press Association) Reed 9.5 a.m. COBURG (Ontario), Tuesday. After a fortnight of sensational trial, the jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff in General Sir Arthur Currie’s £IO,OOO libel suit. Damages of £IOO were awarded. It is understood that the jury was
for several hours divided, 11 for the plaintiff and one for the defendants. In 1860 King Edward danced in the courthouse where the trial was held, when he was visiting Canada as Prince of Wales. The defendants were W. T. R. Preston and F. W. Wilson. In the trial of the £IO,OOO libel suit lodged by General Sir Arthur Currie against the “Port Hope Guide,” the defence sought to prove that the lives of Canadians were needlessly sacrificed in capturing Mons on Armistice Day, and attacked the personal ability of General Currie, who commanded the Canadians in the war.
