ROAD CONSTRUCTION
PROGRESS LEAGUE’S REPORT WORK IN CANTERBURY (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The construction of 23 miles of permanent pavement roads in the district from Conway River to the Rangitata, costing £5,000 a mile, was proposed by representatives of county councils and motorists who waited on the Main Highways Board this afternoon. The proposals, which included the construction of 53£ miles of high-class paving within seven years, were embodied in a report which had been drawn up and approved by the local bodies and the motoring organisations concerned. The final report was left in the hands of the committee. The acting-chairman of the board, Mr. A. E. Jull, said the members were very pleased with the enterprise of the Canterbury Progress League in compiling such a comprehensive report. He said they fully agreed with several of the recommendations. Until the report had been considered at length, however, they were unable to give any definite criticism. The board would study the report in detail in ‘Wellington.
