NEW REGENT
“SECOND TO NONE” “Second to Hone,” the great British film has been wonderfully well received at the New Regent Theatre, and after a most successful season will bo shown for the last time to-morrow night. Although not produced as propaganda, “Second to None” presents many scenes illustrative of the work of the senior service apart from an intriguing story. Although the scenes taken on board the warships are wonderfully interesting, the scenes taken in the Royal Naval Training Establishment at Shotley, by permission of the Admiralty, are particularly interesting. To see hundreds of the youngsters who are training for the Navy swarming up the rigging of a huge mast and manning the yards, is to feel that the traditions of the senior service are being ably carried on by young Britain. In this scene the hero of the story balances precariously on one leg at the very top. “Second to None” is the story of a newspaper bDy whose ambition is to join the Navy and rise to commissioned rank that he may win the hend of his former playmate. Moore Marriott, Benita Hume and lan Fleming have the leading roles, and the production was directed by Jack Raymond under the personal supervision of Miss Dinah Shurey. The screening of the film is preceded by a novel prologue entitled “At Dawn,” representing a battleship at sea. Mr. Hilton Porter, late of the Rose Marie Company, sings with great effect “Drake Goes West,” and is ably assisted by Miss Cecil Hall’s ballet in a series of dances and solos. Mr. Leslie. V. Harvey enhanced his popularity still more with his playing last evening of the “Mikado” selection, and “Chansonette” (Friml). Treating his subjects with true sympathy, Mr,
Harvey delighted all present with his choice of compositions, and rendition.
Mr. Maurice Guttridge took his orchestra through a well-chosen and appropriate programme of musical numbers.
“Two Flaming Youths,” starring W. C. Fields and Chester Conklin, will be the principal attraction on the new programme at the New Regent Theatre on Friday.
Fields plays the party of Gabby Gilfoil, owner of an almost defunct sideshow. Conklin appears as Ben Holden( a sheriff with headquarters in a small town.
Included in the picture are a troupe of side-show attractions brought together for this story. These comprise a fat woman, giant, human skeleton, tattooed woman, midget, wild man. .strong man, and other oddities.
