MOUNT WELLINGTON
BOARD’S ANNUAL MEETING
The large attendance of ratepay< a the annual meeting of the Moun Wellington Road Board last evenin; necessitated the meeting being held the Panmure Public Hall instead che road board offices as previous!: arranged. Over 100 ratepayers at tended.
Criticism of the board’s administration of the road loans was fully expressed. On being asked when the concrete roads were going to be provided with bitumen shoulders, the chairman, Mr. G. Kay, expressed the opinion that it was advisable to allow the formation to consolidate before being laid down in permanent material. The money for the work could come out of the general rates, or if necessary an additional ten per cent, on the loan could be raised.
When taxed with using the road loan money 'or footpath formation before the compl § n of the road, it was stated the money nad been authorised by Order in Council. On the chairman's statement that sufficient time had been taken up, one of the ratepayers asked for British fair play, informing the meeting that they did not have a chance at the last annual meeting to fully discuss the various questions. On the adoption of the balance-sheet the persistent questioner insisted on an explanation as to where the money for the footpath had come from. After a lot of cross-talk objection was raised to the t hanging of the day of the poll from Saturday to Wednesday, the chairman promising that Saturday would be considered next year.
Contrary to expectation no discussion eventuated on the water question affecting the district.
