IN THE MARKET PLACE
I VEGETABLES WELL SUPPLIED DEARER EGGS Apples continue to meet a very weak market. Most lines of vegetables are well supplied and meeting with a steady demand. With heavy consignments of apples available, the market for fruit is weak, and difficulty is experienced in reaching 6s 6d even for Granny Smiths, the most favoured variety at the moment. Some varieties sell as low as 2s 6d a case. The wet weather over the past few days has had a bad effect on the market for tomatoes, which has fallen back slightly after the rise of last week. Fairly heavy supplies are still coming j forward, Hutt growers being steady contributors. The season for Te Kauwhata grapes has ended, and even for the hothouse grapes there is only a limited demand. A few cases of the last Sydney shipment are still available. A fair quantity of ripe bananas on the market keeps prices on a rather low level, though it is expected an improvement will take place this week. In the field and garden produce section there is a tendency toward oversupplies. Swedes, lettuce, celery and kuamaras are offering in large quantities with prices for kumaras especially low and allowing little margin for the growers. Wairarapa and Wellington growers at the moment are supplying the bulk of green vegtables, especially cabbages and cauliflowers. Large quantities of kumaras are being sent up from the Taurangr. district. The egg market has moved up 2d a dozen over the past week and shorter supplies meet with a strong demand.
