High Pitch Now Back to His Best
FL YING JULIET SURPRISES THE SPRINTERS BLUSTERY weather conditions materially affected the attendance at the concluding day's racing of the Waikato Racing Club's autumn meeting. The wind and rain made the conditions very unpleasant, but nevertheless the racing' was interesting throughout.
Very few travelled by the special race i trains from Auckland, and southern transport facilities were not largely availed of. The conditions at Te Rapa could have been worse, for the wind and rain came from the back of the stands. The going was greasy at the start, and of course the track cut up considerably with the racing as the afternoon progressed. The totalisator handled £22,8795, compared with £26.0291 on the concluding day 12 months ago, making a total of <£ 57,155 for the two days against £50,2075, an increase of £6,9475. Bourn Improves Beau Cavalier £568 practically monopolised the betting m the Raglan Handicap Hurdles, Mia Bella £ a 6 and Ripon Abbey £ 84 being best backed of the remainder. The winner turned up in Bourn who finished fourth on Sa.t r urday), and his supporters received a useful double-figure dividend. Ripon Abbey was the first to show out. and led past the stand from Beau Cavalier, Bourn. King Amans, Bright Day, Mia Bella, Wenday, and Laay Cintra, with Scot Free tailing off. Along the back the favourite ran up to Ripon Abbey, the pair racing together in front of Bourn, Bright Day, YV enday, King Amans and Mia Bella. Bourn was on terms with Beau Cavalier entering the straight, Ripon Abbey having dropped back, the next to show up being King Amans, Bright Day and Wenday. In the run home Bourn beat the favourite by one and a-half lengths, with Wenday two lengths away third and Mia Bella fourth. Then came Bright Day, Lady Cintra and King Amans. Miss New Zealand in the Picture Blue Spear was the first selection with backers in the Ohinewai Elandicap, carrying £3Ol, with High Tide £2OB and Oscar £2OO also fancied. It was left to one of the outsiders, Miss New Zealand, to pull off the event, and there was only £4l 10s invested on her chances, her admirers receiving a return within the vicinity of a quarter of a century. Te Waka was left badly, but Good Boy hopped out smartly to lead from Brampton, Winsome Girl, Oscar and The Jack Jumper. Crossing the top Oscar and Arikitoa were in the van, their nearest attendants being The Jack Jumper and Rose Arch. Arikitoa and Oscar turned into the straight together, closely followed by Miss New Zealand, Rose Arch, The Jack Jumper and Tidal. Halfway down the running Miss New Zealand put in her claim, and in a fine finish got up to defeat Oscar by three-quarters of a length, Arikatoa two and a-half lengths away third and Te Waka fourth. Becalmed, Tidal, Good Boy and Storm Fiend were the next to finish. Lucy Rose Gets Home On the strength of his effort on Saturday, when he finished a good fourth after being off the course practically up the straight, Jolly Money £736 was made a slightly better favourite than Lucy Rose £728 for the Eureka Handicap. Gold Money £412 carried the biggest budget of the remainder. From a good dispatch Hiata was first to become conspicuous and when the field settled down was showing the way to Jolly Money, Bulolo, Gold Money and Lucy Rose. There was no alteration till the straight was reached, where Lucy Rose was in third place behind Hiata and the favourite, with Gold Money on her girth, there being little between the quartette. Bulolo and Katarena were next. A good fight to the post saw Lucy Rose wear down the leaders and finish a length and a-half in front of Jolly Money, with Gold Money six lengths away, third. Then came Bulolo, Roman Pearl, Hiata, Taneriri and Katarena. High Pitch Scores Again When speculation ceased on the Te Rapa Handicap, Llandudno was a pronounced favourite with £ 859, High Pitch £4ll, and Corinax £399, receiving most attention of the others. Corinax, Siaosi, and New Moon were prominent at the start, but when the field settled down Day Guard was the pilot, his closest attendants being Ohinerauri, Llandudno, Siaosi, Hipo, Corinax, High Pitch, with Te Kara trailing the field. Before the straight was reached. Stormy put in a run, and Pligh Pitch improved his position, but Day Guard was slightly in front as the home turn was negotiated, with Stormy, High Pitch, Corinax, Ohinemuri, and Queen Arch all bunched, and in hot pursuit. Inside the distance High Pitch challenged Day Guard', and in a desperate finish the former won by half a length, with Te Kara, who came with a rattle over the concluding stages, a similar distance away third. Stormy was fourth, and then came King Merv, New Moon, Corinax, Siaosi, and Hipo. Schorr Scores Levenside £S4S was made favourite for the Huntly Hack Handicap, with Speechless £419 and Schorr £353 best backed of the remainder. Wyoming began smartly and led past the sixfurlong disc from Hakanoa, Arch Queen. Speechless. Cybele, Levenside and Star Comet. The last-named went to the front crossing the top and led into the straight, closely attended by Wyoming. Hakanoa, Modest Boy and Cybele. Once straightened up for the jridge Schorr came through with a wet sail, and finishing determinedly, won by three-quarters of a length from Modest Boy, who defeated Star Comet by a neck, with Auriculus close up fourth. Then followed Levenside, Wyoming, Cybele, Hakanoa, Always, Speechless and Arch Queen. King Smock’s Good Finish Daylight, £628, was made a better, choice than Mervette, £5lO, for the Rangariri High-weight Handicap, with Town Bank, £455, next in demand. Te Koroke was badly left when the tapes were released, while . Rarangi
straight, where the favourite was going nicely. The pair were followed by Mervette, Rarakau, Matinee, Town Bank and Arclieno. All were hard at it in the run to the post, when King Smock appeared on the scene and, finishing splendidly, got up to win by a neck from Daylight and Town Bank, who were locked together, the judge being unable to separate them. Mervette was fourth and then came Archeno, Oration, Te Koroke, Matinee, Rarakau and Kara ngi. Flying Juliet Improves Of the 11 runners in the Flying Handicap, Nancy Lee £829, Ivinglield £7OO. Ned Kelly £525, and Archeen £279. were the best backed, but the winner turned up in Flying Juliet, who has been threatening to win again since Easter Monday. Nancy Lee got a break on the starter but Whaka King went with her, the pair being followed by Ned Kelly, Tinokoa and Muscari. Ned Kelly’s aprpentice rider rushed his mount to the front in short time and was three lengths clear crossing the top. turning for home in front of Kingfield. Whaka King; Romford, Tinokoa and Muscari. Half way up the running Ned Kelly had been collared by Whaka King, and just as the latter looked like winning. Flying Juliet came with a late burst and beat him by three parts of a length. A similar distance away was Tinokoa, with Ned Kelly right up fourth. Then came Romford. Nancy Lee, Archeen, Kingfield, Value and Muscari. Final to Waltzer There was money for Ladies’ Boy £595, Partial Eclipse £494, King Peg £463 and Waltzer £354 in the Te Rore Hack. The early leaders were King Peg and Orchus, and they had charge crossing the top and into the straight from Marble King, Vallar, and Ladies’
Boy. At the turn for home Vallar ran wide and took several others with him. Then Ladies’ Boy dashed through and was well clear at the furlong post, but Waltzer finished very strongly and went on to win by a length from Orchus. with Marble King a neck away, just in front of Ladies’ Boy, who stopped quickly.
