Governor-General’s Father Once Owned Big Waikato Farm
CIR JAMES FERGUSSON, father of the present Gov-ernor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, once owned “a fairly considerable block of land” near Cambridge. So enamoured was the Governor when he rode through the Waikato in the early ’7o’s that he made this purchase, and retained it for a number of years. The Governor-General recalled his father’s association with the Waikato, when being civically welcomed to Ngaruawahia yesterday. It also appeared, he said, that Lord Glasgow visited Ngaruawahia in the '9o’s, so their Excellencies were particularly pleased to remember the connection of their respective fathers with the historic settlement.
“You cannot imagine how pleased we both were to return to New Zealand,” added Sir Charles, “and renew acquaintance with scenes we knew in childhood.” In the case of the Governor-General, he returned after an absence of more than half a century.
