LORD WALERAN SEES A REAL MAORI “HULA”
T ORD WALERAN, the Governor- General’s youthful aide, made his first real acquaintance with the Maoris at Ngaruawahia
day, when the Princess Te P u e a Herangi welcomed the Vice - Regal party. The glossy bell - topper, and immaculate attire of h i s Excellency’s latest A.D.C., which was completed with a pair ot wnne spats, attracted particularly the attention of an ancient wahine, who appeared to concentrate her welcoming cries upon him. The old woman, who was wrapped in a rug, and wore the customary handkerchief under her chin, waltzed round him, waving her arms, and crying the traditional welcome. After completely encircling the surprised young man, and temporarily separating him from his party, the wahine entertained Lord Waleran with an exceedingly nimble exhibition of the kope-kope, a version of the Hawaiian “hula,” in which hip movements predominate.
