"BISHOP OF AOTEA-ROA”
SYNOD APPROVES MAORI APPOINTMENT Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. The Anglican General Synod last evening decided to appoint a Maori suffragan bishop, a member of the Maori race, to the Bishop of Waiapu. For purposes of the canon the term “Maori race” includes all persons reputedly Maori, and those who are by descent Maori or half-caste Maori, or the children of such half-castes. The person appointed shall be known as the Bishop of Aotea-roa, and no nomination ill be made unless provision is made for a stipend of £SOO, a suitable residence and reasonable travelling allowances. The new bishop will have supervision over those members in the diocese of Waiapu and in the dioceses of the other bishops who desire his services. He will have a seat on the General Synod, with a right to speak and vote as a clerical member.
