WILTON FURNACE FOR LOCOMOTIVE
FIRST SOUTH OF THE LINE In order to expedite the delivery of coal from its min e to the railway, the Renown Colliery Company at Rotowaro, near Huntly, has purchased a locomotive and fitted it with a Wilton furnace. The engine was obtained from the Public Works Department and the work of converting it was done by Collet and Sons, of Dannevirke. This Wilton furnace is the first in the Southern Hemisphere to be fitted in a locomotive. On its first journey yesterday it proved a great success. The furnace, a recent invention, is specially fitted to burn slack and waste coal. This means that the running cost is reduced to the lowest possible estimate. One thing which interested those who made the journey on the locomotive was that no sparks issued from the funnel, despite the fineness of the coaJ. The Wilton furnace is in use in several factories and public institutions in New Zealand and is proving very satisfactory.
