LESS UNEMPLOYMENT
MINISTER’S OPINION LAND-CLEARING SCHEME ABANDONED Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. The proposal to clear some thousands of acres of gum and pumice lands in the Far North with unemployed labour has been abandoned. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of Dands, who inspected the areas, said the scheme would be economically unsound. The department is now looking for land suitable for flax production. ITe considered the unemployed position was becoming much less acute.
