TAXI-DRIVER ASSAULTED
ARGUMENT OVER FARE AFFRAY AT FRANKTON (Froyn Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. Alfred Grice, taxi driver, of Frankton, did not think a harmless argument over a taxi fare would result in him being kicked and beaten in the gutter. Hugh Smith and a youth, aged 17 years, were charged with assaulting Grice in the Folice Court, before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.H., this morning. Senior-Sergeant Sweeney said that at 7.30 on Saturday evening, accused engaged Grice’s taxi. Both were under the influence of liquor. Near the dairy factory the accused alighted, and were told the fare was 3s 6d. Accused refused to pay, and as Grice was going for the police, Smith said he would pay, and accused was doing so when Grice was dragged into the gutter, and Smith violently assaulted him. “When I asked for the fare, Smith told me to get to h out of it,” said Grice, giving evidence.
Smith, in the witness-box, claimed that Grice demanded 4s, and lie said the usual fare was 3s, but when he gave him 3s 6d, Grice swore and struck at him. He admitted being under the influence of liquor. The Magistrate convicted and discharged the youth, ordering the suppression of his name. Smith was fined 40s and costs.
