PONSONBY TOO GOOD
SPEED BEATS GRAMMAR The first half of the PonsonbyGrammar Old Boys contest, which was played in front of the stand, had been in progress for some time before last season's champions demonstrated that the absence of Freddy Lucas had not seriously impaired the efficiency of their scoring machinery. The übiquitous McManus, who can get away with two men’s work with the greatest of ease, finally got his backs away from near the half-way, R. Hook capping a clean piece of work by racing round for a good try. The two Hooks, Cammick, Berridge and McManus, will again prove the nucleus of an excellent combi nation, and which should prove troublesome from any corner of the paddock. Jamieson, who was the first emergency to be called on, played a good game and should develop into a useful player. Cammick’s try, which Jamieson started from the other line, showed him to be a heady and resourceful lad. McManus was a of strength. He obtained good support from an even pack of forwards, among whom Fleet, Bunting, Palmer and McCarthy often caught the eye. BATTY LEADS THE PACK Despite the strength of its pack, Grammar failed to hold the faster Ponsonby backs. Badeley, Wilson, A. Singleton and Weir were the most outstanding. Badeley’s kicking was particularly good, a very resourceful left foot saving Grammar a lot. of trouble on one or two occasions. Weir, a new recruit to the Grammar ranks, promises to turn out a solid and reliable half. Batty was the star forward on the
ground, which was only to be expected, and Knight and Cathcart proved capable supports. Mr. F. E. Sutherland gave every satisfaction with the whistle.
