GORDON KELLS WINS THE STEEPLECHASE
WINTER ATHLETICS START A fine return to form in the one and a-half mile steeplechase by Gordon Kells was the chief feature of the second series of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club'.s winter competition, held at the Outer Domain on Saturday. A field of 12 went away in the big event, and Mr. Morton’s handicapping, as at Carlaw Park the week before, would have been hard to better. Neither J. W. Savidan. nor N. F. Cooper competed, the former turning out on an adjoining ground for the Belmont Soccer eleven. The first time round the corner flag saw the limit man, Alf. Clarke, still in the lead, followed by Adams, Wilson. Henshall, Watt, and Crum. Kells, the back-marker, had overtaken two men. Going up the hill at the beginning of the final lap, Kells spurted, and about 400 yards from home took the lead, to maintain it and win by 20 yards from J. Crum, who in turn was 10 yards ahead of C. Barker. Green, Henshall. Adams, Wilson, and Clarke finished in that order._ In the final of the 75 yards handicap Roper was caught unawares by the pistol, and did not get off the mark. Butler went ahead, and, racing for the last 20 yards neck and neck with Clarke, eventually won by inches. Henry was a close third. Results are as follow.— 75YDS HANDICAP First Heat T.
