CITY DEFEATED BY TRAINING COLLEGE
CLEVER RED CENTRE A rather ragged game between Training College and City, at Eden Park, was mainly remarkable for the play of a City "discovery.” Crook, who played centre. Rather like the famous Cook in feature and build, the little Red three-quarter delighted the crowd with his spectacular play and safe defence. Although Jacob was safe at fullback, the City defence was not strong enough to keep the Blues out. Mingay played a fair game at half, but was slow in getting the ball away. His try. scored from a scrum five yards from the goal line. was. however, a fast piece of work, and it was unfortunate that Dixon missed a fairly easy kick. Heard was the next best of a patchy line of backs. Jacob badly twisted his leg toward the end of the game, and had to be replaced by Jobson. Vic. Butler was a tower of strength to Training College, and, times without number, picked the ball from the very toes of the City forwards, who were going well in the loose. Butler was swinging no mean boot either, and the kick from the side-line which converted Abbott's try was a fine one. The only other College back to shine with any degree of brilliance was Abbott. who was responsible for six of the 11 points scored by his side. Blue forwards worked bard in the tight play, but neglected to follow up. and did not over-exert themselves in the loose. The final scores were; Training College 11, City 6. -
