NEW ANGLICAN CHURCH
OPENING AT MT. ROSKILL Anglicans of Mount Roskill have erected a church with accommodation for 200 people, and on Saturday the building was opened. A bazaar was held in the afternoon and a social in the evening. The Rev. P. S. Smallfield has accepted the position of vicar at the church, which occupies a commanding position in Mount Albert Road next to the new fire station. It is intended to erect a larger church when the population increases and to use the present structure as a hall and Sunday school. The actual outlay for building the church was only £ 300, the cost of the material. The construction work was all done voluntary by members, said Mr. P. W. White, vicar’s warden, in a financial statement presented at the social. He specially mentioned the work of Mr. H. J. Leahy, who had prepared the plans and supervised the work, and on behalf of the members he presented him with a set of Dickens’s works. The bazaar was a great success, £3O being realised. An anonymous donor presented a very beautiful organ and the furnishings for the church were given by the members. The bell was presented by the family of the late Mr. Frederic Smith in memory of their father; Onehunga gave the lectern, and Mr. S. Scarborough did all the carting free of charge. The Rev. Frank Willis, vicar of St. Andrew’s. Mr. W. J. Jordan. M.P., and Mr. P. W. White, minister’s warden, addressed the assembly, and a musical entertainment was given by the children under the direction of Mesdames Molesworth and Dale and Miss Monk. The annual meeting of the par'.sh will be held in the new hall to-morrow evening. -
