ORMOND GOLD CUP WON BY HYNANNA
KEEN RACING AT HASTINGS VESPERUS WINS AGAIN (Special to THE SUN) HASTINGS, Saturday. Fin© weather favoured the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club for the second day o£ its autumn meeting. There was a large attendance and the track provided good going* Speculation was brisk, the totalisator handling £19,539, compared with £17,485 on the second day last year, an increase of £2,054. The totalisator figures for the meeting were £32,449, as against £31,113 last year, an increase of £1,336. Peneus Wins Well Braeman was a little better backed than Peneus in the Karamu Hurdles. Peneus soon went to the front and led through the straight from Ballyfarnon, Peshwa and Bonny Rill. Braeman moved up along the back but Peneus led into the straight from Ballyfarnon and Peshwa. . Peneus was well clear at the last fence where Braeman lost his rider. Peneus won by three lengths from Ballyfarnon, with Peshwa four lengths back third, and Geyser Land fourth. A Close Finish Aston was a strong favourite for the Pakapaki Handicap. Callanmore jumped out well and led to the straight from Helotis, Silver Tray, Aston and | Fee Simple. In a hard finish Collanmore won by a head from Helotis with Fee Simple. In a hard finish Callanof Aston, Silver Tray and Plimmcrton. A Close Call Kahoro began well from the rails in the Juvenile Handicap, and with Banket and Gold Bag, led to the straight from Knightlike, Millais and Miss Ransom. There was some crowding in the straight and Miss Ransom and Millais came on past the post together, but Miss Ransom got the decision. Toxeuma, who was bracketed with Millais, was third, and Sylvan Bell fourth. Hynanna's Fine Finish The Ormond Memorial Gold Cup was a great race. Reremona, the favourite, began well, but at the six furlongs Joy King led Heremoana, and Great Charter then took charge, and led round to the straight from Hynanna, Crown Area, Joy King and The Hawk. Reremoana gave way in the straight, where Great Charter looked a winner, but Hynanna and The Hawk finished fast and Hynanna just won, Great Charter half a length away third, Reremoana fourth and Joy King last. Staved Off Challenge Tresham was favourite for the Burke Memorial Stakes and several others were well backed. Royal Bamon and Addlepate were in front through the straight the first time, followed by Cohesion and Vesperus. Along the back the order was Addlepate, Royal Bamon, Vesperus and Cohesion. Vesperus took charge in the straight and Tresham challenged, but Vesperus won by a head. Royal Bamon was a fair third, and Bavid Garrick fourth. Favourite Scores Moa Bird was favourite in the Akitio Handicap. Le Camp, Breamy, Royal Picture and Moa Bird led to the straight, where Moa Bird came through and won by half a length from High Heather, with Breamy half a length away third, Henekatorangi fourth, and Taku Tama last. Favourites Fail Gaze and King Midas were favourites for the Ohiti Handicap. Gaze drew the rails, and got away well, but Lin Arlington soon took up the running and led from Huikai, King Midas and Gaze. At ‘the straight entrance Lin Arlington was in front from Royal Elm, King Midas, Huikai, Coot and Mountain Heather. Gaze finished without any dash and Lin Arlington won by a length from Huikai, with King Midas a close third and Princess Nata fourth. Othon and Clavers were prominent among the next lot. By Two Lengths The meeting ended with the Okawa Handicap, for which Jeanette was favourite. Jeanette was in front after the field had gone two furlongs and led to the straight from Kaiti, who then went on to win by two lengths from Jeanette, with Sarchee third. Plain Sailing was fourth.
