Award Cancelled

MARINE COOKS’ UNION

ACTION IN AUSTRALIA

(United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright,) Reed. 9.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, To-day

In the Federal Arbitration Court, Chief Justice Dethridse, on the application of the shipowners, cancelled the award of the Cooks’ Union as from Friday next. He said that if the union satisfied him that it had abandoned direct action, he Yvould consider lifting the suspension. Mr. Tudehope, for the Marine Cooks’ Union, asked Mr. Justice Dethridge whether he thought suspension of the award would lead to a settlement of the dispute, or whether there was no better way out. Mr. Justice Dethridge: There’s only one other way, that is for your men to man the ships. You can then come forward for redress of your grievances in an orderly way. Mr. Tudehope: Then I suggest the award be cancelled only as regards Huddart-Parkers, as the other companies are unaffected. Mr. Justice Dethridge: You cannot indulge in direct action against one respondent, and at the same time continue to hold the benefits of the award. Mr. Menzies, for Huddart-Parkers: We could commission several ships by Monday if the union is ready to resume. Mr. Justice Dethridge then announced his decision.

FEARS OF HOLD-UP

PREJUDICE TO LABOUR COMING ELECTIONS Reed. Noon. SYDNEY, To-day. The All-Australian Trade Union Conference, fearing a general shipping hold-up owing to the cooks’ dispute, which will be likely to prejudice Labour at the general elections, has referred the dispute to the emergency committee for action. The litigation between Mr. Thomas Walsh against Mr. Jacob Johnson and Mr. Thomas Cameron, officials of the Seamen’s Union, in which Mr. Walsh seeks to restrain the other two from interfering with him in the conduct of his work as general secretary, has stopped temporarily, the equity judge allowing the matter to stand over till August 20, pending a ballot of the whole of the members for the general secretaryship.
