RACING AT TIMARU
CUP TO BATTLE COLOURS BLACK DUKE’S VICTORY (Special to THE SUN) TIMARU, Friday. The South Canterbury Jockey Club opened its autumn meeting at Timaru to-day in rainy weather. As a result of heavy rain overnight the track was in a heavy state and there was only a fair crowd in attendance. Totalisator returns showed a slight decrease, the total for the day amounting to £9,163, as against £9,347 10s on the corresponding day last year. Bonatic Wins Well The Tekapo Hurdles resulted in a comfortable victory for Bonatic. The Boniform gelding was always handy to the leaders, and after heading Royal Lad at the top of the straight had little difficulty in defeating the fastfinishing Scion by two lengths. Royal Land, who tired over the last furlong, was three lengths behind Scion in third place, and was followed home by Aberfeldy, who should strip a vastly improved horse at his next start. Never in Doubt Rotor won the Gladstone Hack Handicap with comparative ease from Amor and Green Cloth. The Tractor gelding was second to last at one stage, but gradually improved his position and was just in behind the pacemaker at the home turn. A furlong from the post he went to the front and easily beat Amor by three-quar-ters of a length. Green Cloth, who finished well, cut Camisader out of third place in the last few strides. Solgele All the Way Drawing the rails and jumping out smartly, Solgele never left the result of th© Electric Stakes in doubt. He led into the straight from Grey Finely and Sea Gay, and eventually beat Grey Finch by two lengths. Malmsey second place in the race won by Royal Damon. H© scored nicely in the open six furlongs at Trentham on the first day of th© Marlborough meeting, and was well backed for the similar event on the second day, but was closed in on the rails when attempting a run near th© finish. But for this he might have won again. Certainly in the minor company he is being placed among h© will be holding his own in th© winter if he keeps right. A GOOD JUMPER Brigadier Bill is to be put to steeplechasing this winter, and might make his first appearance at Hawera next month. H© is a good jumper, and it was his ability in this department which enabled him to win the hurdle race on the opening day of the recent Manawatu meeting. There is a possibility of Royal Damon coming to Trentham and entering the stabl© of J. Gage Williams, as he has been purchased by Mr. Eric Riddiford. Royal Damon is at the top of his form, and weight does not seem tc prevent him from winning so long as he is kept away from the .really classy gallopers. H© won with 9.13 in the saddle at the Manawatu meeting, and with over 10.0 at Masterton, and in each case just walked in. GREAT 'CHASER Puwhero is in pretty good nick for th© steeplechasing season. He jumps as well as ever h© did, but probably will stay just as moderately. Braeman is another who will be a newcomer to steeplechasing this winter. He has done a little hurdling, and was looking very well when he ran at Awapuni the other day. His trainer, V. H. Colello is regarded as a good man with a jumper and might win some cross-country events with his half-brother to Braeburn, who won two Wanganui Steeplechases and other races. Vigilance was not raced at the Marlborough meeting, as it is deemed advisable to keep her away from the racecourse for a while, and she is enjoying a short spell.
finished on well to gain third piapt and was chased home by Pha«t«r.
Meritorious Victory Battle Colours scored a meritoriotu victory in th© Timaru Cup. Hie B»i----ferino gelding was always near thf front, and though challenged stroagr by King Balboa, he easily shook ft* latter off and cam© home an easy wiener by a length and a-half. Overhat} never looked a winner at any stife, and though expected to run well, Ffcwt Rank also let her admirers down. Assurance and Fresco were puttinf is good work down the straight, but 8:r Roy ran a wretched race and wai eventually the last horse home. <kr Sonnet ran an excellent race tor & mile and was almost in line with Doe Jose in fourth place at the end. Carnot was some distance back early, bit unwound a strong finishing run whirtook him into third place, four length away from the winner. Battle Colour* has made a wonderful improvement during the past few months, and as he is improving with each run, it ortaintly seems as if he will win an important handicap in the near future. An Exercise Canter Black Duke was backed down to * short price for the i? mi th field Handicap, but he never gave his supporters any cause for anxiety. He ran past Gold Brick a furlong fro® hon? and. slowing down to a mere carter easily beat Money Mine by tw® lengths. Gold Brick tired into tout place, being followed home by ite. A Royal Battle The Otipua Steeples resulted in » duel between Royal Wink and Raya* Fashion. The pair were always together in the early stages, but six ni* rlongs from home Royal Fashion wwto the front and. not being e . easily accounted for Royal Wink- To*; Babe was 30 lengths away third, arc Whipcord was beaten off. Sir W ai Adjutor came to grief at the douNe front of the stands. Ex-Aucklander Wins Carinthia, a cast-off from ningham’s Auckland stable, s surprise victory in the Rosewill dicap, and returned his supporters dividend close on a quarter of a tury. The Lucullus gelding was ways in the van. and stalling on Exchange, beat the latter D head. Honeycomb, who rniared jump out, was half a length away tns* followed by Wild Work. Easy for Taboo Galloping with great ease b W heavy' going. Taboo ran home a c® fortable winner in the Doncaster dicap. Always handy to the P***! maker, he passed Moratorium __ Mime in the straight and the latter by two lengths. Mist was half a length away •*— followed by Gold Mint.
