SHOPS BURNED DOWN
FIRE AT BLENHEIM BUSINESS BLOCK SAVED Press Association. BLENHEIM, Friday. A fire to-night destroyed three shops in Charles Street, part of a large block belonging to the Wensley Estate. The outbreak originated in a shop occupied as an office by Mr. H. R. Rogers, commission agent, and spread to Jim Lee’s laundry on the one side, and to Mrs. M. L. Cresswell’s home cookery shop on the other side. All these premises were gutted, although Mrs. Cresswell’s shop was not so badly damaged as the other two. In addition, the stock in Miss Kiernan’s millinery shop was damaged by smoke and water. Mr. Rogers had a policy on his office equipment for £SO in the London and Lancashire Office. Jim Lee and Mrs. Cresswell had no insurance. Miss Kiernan’s stock is insured in the United Office, but the amount is not stated. The insurances on the buildings, which were part of an extensive wooden structure, are unknown. The fire brigade made a great save, as the three shops were practically destroyed before they reached the scene. At one time it looked as if nothing could save the block.
