PUZZLED GARDENERS
J. K., Onehunga. —(l) The sample of bulblets submitted is a variety of Garlic and is good for pickling and flavouring; (2) seedling quinces may eventually bear fruit, but it is doubtful whether the strain will come true to the parent plant.
G.H., Papatoetoe. —(l) Full out all the dead trees and cut back all withered branches on others, this may stop them dying back further, replant early in June; (2) re fruit trees, cut away all the new shoots appearing from the root as these are only suckers from below the graft. Prune back the branches and if the tree is not too badly scorched they will throw out from fresh buds in the spring.
