CURING STERILITY

REMARKABLE EXPERIMENTS Much interest is being taken in the possibility of curing sterility or impotence in domestic animals by what is known as the grafting operation. At a recent meeting of the Royal Counties Division of the National Veterinary Medical Association, Mr. G. P. Male, Reading, reported the progress of a Sealyham hitch upon which he had grafted new ovaries about a year ago. After breeding two litters, the last in 1923, she became sterile. Following on the operation, she seemed to become years younger, ar.a she has since had another litter. Parts of the testicle of a fairly large calf were also grafted by Mr. Male into each groin of a bull that had lost sexual inclination as the result of a local abscess caused by injury. Since the operation the bull has sired a live calf. A two-year-old boar that had been unable to produce any young is now being used successfully, and a valuable aged ram has recently been operated upon, but it is too early yet to say what the results may be. It is hoped that sterile cows and mares may be made fruitful by the process of grafting.
