WOMAN’S DUTIES
MOTHERS’ LEAGUE IDEALS
TALE BY HER EXCELLENCY
‘ Woman in tlie past has been looked ; i on by men as rather an inferior being, but hers is actually the most import- ! ant duty, that of moulding and training the human soul,’* said Lady Alice > Fergrusson at a combined meeting of the Takapuna, Bays water and Devonport branches of the Mothers’ League at St. Michael’s and All Angels’ Parish Mall, Belmont, yesterday. Her Excellency outlined briefly the , objects of the league. It is a religious body, but entirely non-sectarian. Its : chief aim is to help young mothers to bring up their children as good citizens and to this end both young and old are encouraged to join. No mother can afford to neglect this source ot j help. The tone of a country can never j go higher than that of its women, and ! it behoved them all to identify themselves with a movement that had as j its basis the founding of true patriotism. It was in this manner only that the wrongs of a country could be | righted. I “I approve of the young people of ( this generation," said Lady Alice. “They are more self-reliant and adaptable j than their mothers, but they have not a sense of thrift and are too easily dis- j couraged.” This last, she thought, was chiefly • responsible for the large number oi j divorces in New Zealand. If newly - , married couples would only try hardei j to make their marriage a success when the first romance had worn off, a time j would come when they would learn to j give and take, the secret of every sue- j cessful union. A vote of thanks to her Excellency, proposed by Mrs. Evans, president of j the Devonport branch, was carried with | acclamation. A song was given by i Mrs. V. Blackwell. On her arrival at the hall, Lady Fergusson, who was accompanied by her j daughter, Mrs. Mavilland. was pie- , sented with a bouquet by Margaret j Cooke.
