1,000 HORSES FOR MOVIES
USED IN “BEAU SABREUR”
It is a difficult task to gather together 1,000 horses nowadays. Ten years ago, or even five, that number would easily have been found, but since the advent of the automobile times have changed. One of the hardest jobs ever given Jack Moore, superintendent of the 1,000-acre Paramount ranch in the foothills north of Hollywood, was that of rounding up 1,000 steeds to aid in making "Beau Sabreur,’" one of the most spectacular motion-picture productions ever made. Ranchers in five States had to be entitled in the drive to get the thousand horses. They were brought to Hollywood from California, Montana, Wyoming. Oregon and Texas. “I don’t think that there are that many horse.s in all of California now,” Moore says. There are 2,000,000 automobiles here, this State being the second largest in motor-car population in America. Another difficult task was locating 200 camels, which were also needed in the production of the picture. The picture, “Beau Sabreur,” will be shown in Auckland shortly, and is from the story by P. C. Wren, author of "Beau Geste.” Gary Cooper is featured in the picture, also a big cast of notables, including Evelyn Brent and William Cowell.
