NO RISKS TAKEN
FIREMEN AT OIL BLAZE INQUEST ON DRIVER BEUTH Holding that no unreasonable risks had been taken, the coroner, Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., yesterday returned a verdict of accidental death at the inquest On Rholda G. Beuth, a fireman, aged 27, who died following injuries received at Winstone’s oil fire at Freeman’s Bay on April 1. Charles A. Harper, engine driver for the western district fire station, said that he, Beuth, and fireman Walker were playing a lead on the walls. They .were from 30ft to 40ft from the wall, and there had been no heavy explosions. A big explosion came without warning, and a rain of blazing oil descended on the three of them. Dr. Stuart Mackay said that death was due to shock and toxaemia following extensive burns. The coroner, in returning his verdict, said that a gallant fireman had died while doing his duty, but he did not think the men had taken risk greater than that accepted every time they went out to a fire.
