Suburbs Will Have Chain of Theatres

BIG MOVIE PROJECT FULLER-HAYWARD DEAL It is the intention of the FullerHayward Theatres, Ltd., to ring Auckland with a chain of suburban picture houses, at which the standard Will b e in keeping with that at their city movie theatres. rpHIS firm already controls, or is interested in, a chain of 63 houses throughout the Dominion. An announcement of the firm’s policy of expansion in the Auckland suburbs was made to-day by Mr. Henry Hayward, governing director, and Mr. Phil Hayward. With this end in view the firm has purchased the picture interests of M,r. J. H. Quinn in the Capitol, Edendale and Empire Theatres. These houses will in future be included in the Fuller-Hay-ward circuit. The Anglican Church site, opposite the Great North Road, has been acquired at Grey Lynn. Plans are already in preparation for the erection of a palatial theatre with a seating capacity of 1,500. In addition there will be seven shops in this building and suites of offices. This block of buildings will be in the centre of Grey Lynn’s business activities, and will considerably add to the importance of this rapidly-growing suburb. A modern theatre and cabaret is also planned for Takapuna, which will complete the chain. The theatres controlled by r FullerHay wards in the suburbs will be: Tudor Theatre, Remuera. Strand Theatre, Onehunga. Foresters’ Hall, Onehunga. Capitol, Dominion Road. Edendale Theatre, Edendale. Empire, Edendale. Picture House, Grey Lynn. Victoria Theatre, Devonport. Plaza Theatre, Takapuna. M,r. Quinn, the present director of the Capitol, Edendale, and Empire Theatres, who is leaving on a holiday, will, on his return, act as managingdirector of these three houses under the Fuller-Hayward auspices. The chain of suburban theatres will mean that the company will have 10,000 seats to sell nightly—quite distinct from their city enterprises.

It will also mean that the standard of entertainment in the city will be brought to the door of the suburban dweller.
