PROTECTING CHILDREN

SOCIETY MEETS MORE SUPPORT NEEDED "The little child hurt by a passing motor-car is tenderly picked up by the chance passers-by because its plight is seen,” stated the Rev. P. S. Smallfield, chairman of the committee of management of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children at the annual meeting last evening. “We desire to arouse that same tenderness for the child not seen by the wayside, yet living in this city, neglected, maimed or often cruelly ill-treated.” The present time seemed opportune for an appeal to the public for increased financial support and for the provision of legacies to the society. An extended ,s st of annual subscribers was needed. During the financial year ending Mach. 31 the general public had subscribed £304 12s 3d and gave, in donations on the day of the street collection, the sum of £279 16s 7d with the addition of £36 6s 8d contributed through the Ladies’ Committee, making a total of £620 15s 6d. As the annual outlay of the society was about £BSO, the income fell short of what was expected. An instructive and interesting address was given by Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M. Instrumental and vocal items were given by Miss N. L. Dash, Miss Marriage, Miss Rossier, and Mr. Taylor. Dances were performed by Miss Jessamine Kirkwood. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, His Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson; president, Mr. A. J. Stratford; vice-presidents, the Revs. G. Bond, E>. ID. Scott, C. A. Watson, L. Fletcher, A. Thornhill, S. A. Goldstein, Dr. A. C. Purchas, Mr. J. J. O’Brien, Miss E. Melville, Mrs. Simpson, Mrs. Preston Chambers and Archdeacon H. F. Holbrook; executive committee, Mesdames Preston Chambers, G. Coats, G. Cruickshank, A. Devore, F. Turner, Miss S. Jackson, Miss K. Wilding, Sister Hannah, Dr. R. M. Beattie, Messrs. D. Donaldson, R. Michaels, J. Brook and J. O’Brien; lion, treasurer, Mr. Julian Brook; auditor, Mr. E. Jones; advisory solicitor, Mr. R. E. N. Matthews; hon. medical officers, Dr. Hilda Northcroft, Dr. Gladys Montgomery, Dr. Purchas, Dr. Milsom and Dr. Alexandra Warnock.
