BILLIARDS
EMPIRE CHAMPIONSHIP j IN SOUTH AFRICA NEXT j YEAR I
INVITATION TO N.Z. The next contest for the Empire amateur billiards championship is to take place in Johannesburg in 1929. Mr. Fred Farrell, secretary of tlie Auckland Sports Club, received in the last mail from South Africa, a letter from Mr. Arthur Walker, president of the South African Billiards’ Control Association, drawing attention to the championship which takes place in' South Africa next year, and inviting a competitor from New Zealand. Mr. Walker writes: “It is hoped we shall get representatives from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, and, in addition, there seem good prospects of Australia, Canada and India sending their champions over. The tournament is to be staged in South Africa because this country is the holder of the trophy. We all feel certain that you will send a representative, and we are looking forward to the pleasure of welcoming fiim.” Mr. Farrell says that he and other officials are very keen on sending a New Zealander away to compete in the championship, and that it is felt by all enthusiasts and players of billiards that a representative could be sent from the Dominion, worthy of making a good showing. At present, however, nothing definite has been decided, and it is not likely that any move will be made until the next New Zealand championship takes place. The present amateur champion is Mr. Roberts, of Auckland, and if he can again clinch the championship he -will, no doubt, be the first considered in the selection of a representative to make the trip to South Africa,
