SMART ARREST
CAPTURE AFTER CHASE JOY-RIDER CAUGHT STRUGGLE IN FIELD AT MANGERE Smart work by the police resulted in the arrest of a motorcar thief irt the early hours of this morning. The capture was made in a field at Mangcre by Constable Frank Johnsen, of the Onehunga police. During the chase one of the constable's hands was severely lacerated on a barbed-wire fence. The motor-car was an English model belonging to Mr. E. R. N. Russell, of Princes Street. It was left standing outside his gate. Just after midnight Miss Russell heard the noise of the engine and rushed to a window to see the car disappearing along Princes Street. The police were communicated with immediately. No time was lost by the central police in passing the information on to their suburban stations. Constable Johnsen received the information in Onehunga and soon afterwards saw the car approaching him along the main street, toward the Mangere Bridge. He tried to stop the car. but without success. Hailing a taxi Constable Johnsen set out in pursuit and a lively chase followed. As the constable overhauled the stolen car the driver jumped clear and tried to escape through some paddocks. After a struggle and a chase which involved clambering through a fence, the motorist was captured. The man was wearing a bandsman’s uniform. This morning at the Onehunga Police * Court Nicholas Frederick Lindholm, alias Lind, alias De Casse. was charged before Mr. J. E. Green, J.P., with converting a motor-car. valued at £SOO, to his own use and with resisting arrest. He was remanded to appear at the Auckland Magistrate’s Court on May 3. Bail was refused.
