WAIKATO FIXTURE ELLERSLIE TRIALS SEVERAL USEFUL EFFORTS Track conditions at Ellerslie were ideal for training? operations this morning, but the fast work witnessed did not attract a great, deal of interest, due no doubt to .several horses with engagements at th& Waikato fixture having been entrained for Te Rapa earlier in the day. Number one grass was the track „ available for trainers, and with the exception of Royal Tea, who worked the tan, all of the trials were registered on that track. Royal Tea was the first candidate to indulge in fast work, and his task was restricted to five furlongs on the tan in 1.8 1-5. It will not be for lack of condition if he fails to race prominently in his engagement at Hamilton, for he looks ail the better for his recent racing. An Interesting Trial Corinax, a Storey Memorial Cup candidate, who was ridden by J. Carnmick, and Modest Boy (S. Tremain) were associated in a bout over seven furlongs, covered in the fair time of 1.31 2-5. The pair got away together and strode over the initial furlong in 13, the first three taking 39 3-5, and the first half mile 52 1-5. Corinax, who was ridden out, was severail lengths ahead of Modest Boy at the finish, but it was obvious that the latter could have done much better had he been required. He appears to be coming back to form. The stable-companions, Brampton and Respirator, were not bustled to finish on terms at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.19, the last five taking 1.6. Farfait Amour, with a fair weight in the saddle, was resjjonsible fox* a good performance in covering five furlongs in 1.4 1-5. An even pace was maintained throughout, the last three furlongs taking 39 1-5. Two-thirds at Avondale suggest that the gelding with the PTeneli name will soon do better.
Tidal and Hyde Park were together, with Winsome Girl some distance away, when the trio • got to the end of six furlongs in 1.19. The last named, however, could have done' better. Bombarder, who was giving Valla r a good pull in the weighty had an advantage over the Valkyrian gelding when the pair travelled over five furlongs in , 1.4 1-5, the last half-mile taking 50 1-5. Bombarder’s second at Avondale was a promising effort. This completed the pre-breakfast work. Later Princess Ronnie with her Storey Memorial Cup pilot, 1L Wiggins, in the saddle completed her usual good effort by striding over six furlongs in 1.18 1-5. She was not bustled at any stage of the journey. The fractional times registered were: First furlong 13, two furlongs 26 2-5, and the first three, 38 3-5. It was apparent that the ponified ■ daughter of Polydamon was under a strong pull throughout, and she could have improved considerably on her time. A Good Sprint From a time making point of view, Archeno, ridden by a light-weight, recorded the best gallop of the morning. She was trotted round to the six furlong post, and jumping away, smart y strode over the first couple of furlongs in 24 3-5. The pace was still on when three furlongs were passed over n 36 2-'5, and notwithstanding that she ./as allowed-to go easily when nearing 'he post, the time registered—l.l6 3-5 - was excellent. Archeno claims-engage-ments at Te Rapa. Mountain Guide, who was oh the rails, surprised' by finishing alongside of Ladies’ Boy, when the pair covered six furlongs in 1.19, the first- three furlongs taking 37 4-5.. Bluespear was allotted an easy si r furlongs, the last half mile taking 55 2-5, and Cynthia N, traversed a round, getting to the end of the last sever, furlongs in 1.33 1-5. The Jumpers Marble Moupt (J. Mephan) gave no. cause for complaint by the manner in which he jumped a, couple of the rony hurdle's. Spalmore (J. Sharkey) was given, an essay over a couple of the schooling hurdles. A slow pace was maintained between the obstacles, but there was nothing wrong with his jumping. Loyal Lad (T. AVilliams) took on a couple of the pony hurdles, and although he got safely over, there is plenty of room for improvement. .After safely schooling over a pony hurdle, Royal Trek (J. Sharkey) had a lesson over the stone-wall. He .attempted to run off, but persevered with, eventually negotiated the jump. A Hastings telegram states thyU Callanniore 7.31 should be included in the acceptances foi' the Poukawa Handicap to-morrow.
