Obituary

MR. HUGH GARDNER (From Our Otvn Correspondent) HUNTLY. To-day. A well-known resident of Pukemiro Junction, and an old employee of the Pukemiro Collieries, Ltd,, Mr. Hugh Gardner, died this week. Mr. Gardner was born at Hartlepool, Durham, in 1862. He leaves a wife i and a grown-up family of five (two sons and three daughters), and several grandchildren. The funeral took place on Tuesday at Ivimihia, and was largely attended. The Rev. Mr. Stewart conducted the burial service. MR. H. J. D. ROBERTSON A prominent figure in commercial, public and sporting life, Mr. Herbert James Duncan Robertson, of Mount Hobson Road, Remuera, died recentlv at the age of 53. He was a director of Robertson and Poison, Ltd., and was the oldest-estab-lished grain broker in Auckland, and one of the best known throughout the Dominion. During the war Mr. Robertson received decorations from the British and French Governments for his activities in the formation of the Auckland branch of the British Red Cross Society. Tie also gave valuable assistance in relief work during the epidemic of 1918, and, as a member of the Rotary Club, was always ready to assist any worthy charitable object. He was a member of the Auckland Golf Club, and for the past three years was a member of the committee. Mr. Robertson is survived by his wife and one son. Messrs. E. A. Robertson, Avondale, C. V. Robertson, Melbourne, and H. A. Robertson are brothers of deceased, and his sisters are Miss M. B. Robertson, of Christchurch Technical College, Mrs. G. H. Hall, Wanganui, Mrs. H. Barton, Ponsonbv, and Mrs. W. T. Nutting, Auckland. Among those attending the funeral at Purewa Cemetery yesterday were the Hon. George Fowlds, Mr. J. Crawford, secretary of the Orphans' Club, Mr. Charles Rhodes, district governor of Rotary, and Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, president of the Auckland Rotary Club, Mr. S. J. Hanna and Mr. A. E. M. Rhind, Auckland Golf Club: Messrs. G. Fleming, D. Poison, F. M. Winstone, W. Prentis, J Hall, S. C. Gilfillan, R. Herbert, C. J. Rosser, J McK. Wilson, C. M. Gordon and T. H. Macky. The pall-bearers were Messrs, J. McK. Wilson, J. O’Connor, C. M. Gordon, P. B. Morris, B. Bassett and B. C. Jacobs.
