NEW IMMIGRATION SCHEME WORKS WELL

AUSTRALIAN OFFICIAL IN AUCKLAND

After four years at the Auatralian Immigration Office m London Major A. Allen is returning to Sydney by the Niagara, convinced that too long a stay in England i* apt to cloud his outlook on Australian life.

“We can never fill the requirements for good boys for farms or for domestic servants.” said Major Allen co-dav. “Australia is getting a very' fine type of immigrant through the Big Brother movement- We will not take typists or stenographers but only people who will not interfere with recognised professions or trades in Australia.” Under the Development of Migration Commission which was set up 18 months ago the scheme of immigration to Australia is working very well continued Major Allen. He went on to say that the Australian office has its own training centre in England now and those coming out are required to take a two months’ course. This particularly applies to domestics who if they are not up to the standard of their references are not allowed to migrate. The office also has its own medical inspecting officers as the previous system did not work satisfactorily. Major Allen mentioned that the greater bulk of the immigrants come out under the nomination system, which prevails in .New Zealand. Others are selected. “We want people who can and will assist in the development of Australia.” concluded Major Allen, “and I think we are achieving a | success.”
