It p covers a greater area than the whole i of the British Isles, and is on the aver- . ; age over 3,000 feet above sea level, g i It is one great stretch of undulating ? sand dunes like the waves of the sea, r varying in height from 30 to 100 feet i from trough to crest. Here and there are drops to the mud-flats of dried river | beds and, especially in the north, to r huge depressions which the occasional • scanty rains turn into pans of brackish & ; water, often encrusted with salt- Over - parts of it no other vegetation is to be s seen but tough grass, knee-high, growing in tufts; other districts are covt ered with dense scrub; and occasional t patches or forest merely emphasise the i general barrenness.
