ELECTION NECESSARY
CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE REPORT PRESENTED As one more’ nomination lias been received than there are vacancies, the City School Committee will hold an election this year in St. James’s Hall. At the annual meeting of the committee, presided over last evening by Mr. W. Millar, the balance-sheet showed the income of the committee to have been £490 12s and expenditure £474 4s 6d The small balance was due to the fact that a deficit had been carried over from the previous year. Roll numbers at the schools declined until December, when the board closed Nelson Street School, the children being distributed as evenly as possible between Beresford Street and Napier Street schools. Wellesley Street School, which came into the committee’s charge at the beginning of 1928, had a roll number of 300. Inspectors’ reports showed that the work done at the schools was entirely satisfactory. Owing to the unsatisfactory financial circumstances of the committee, it was found impossible to provide the children, with free stationery. It was hoped that, in keeping with the Government’s policy of free education, the Education Board would eventually provide children with all necessary equipment. Mr. Andrew W. Heath was appointed headmaster of the Wellesley Street School. Miss Mary E. Stevens was approved as infant mistress, and Mr. J. H. Menzies as assistant master at the same school. It was decided to transfer the roll of honour from the recently closed Nelson Street School to the Napier Street School.
